Bluefield State to Honor Class of 1976 with Golden Anniversary Celebration During Commencement Weekend

Bluefield State University will honor the Class of 1976 with a 50th anniversary “Golden Class” celebration during commencement weekend, May 15–16, bringing alumni back to campus for a series of special events recognizing their legacy and impact.

The milestone celebration highlights the enduring contributions of the Class of 1976 to the institution, then known as Bluefield State College, while reconnecting graduates with the university’s continued growth and momentum.

“This Golden Anniversary is about more than celebrating a milestone,” said Darrin Martin, president of Bluefield State University. “It is about honoring a class that helped shape who we are today and welcoming them back to see the momentum we are building for the future. Their legacy lives on in the success of our students and the strength of this institution.”

Events begin at noon on Friday, May 15, with a luncheon hosted by the Bluefield State University Alumni Association in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center. Featured speaker James E. Rogers will share reflections on his professional journey and the importance of alumni engagement.

A campus reception will follow at 6 p.m. Friday, offering classmates an opportunity to reconnect and reflect on their time at Bluefield State.

The celebration continues Saturday, May 16, with a post-commencement reception honoring both the graduating Class of 2026 and returning members of the Class of 1976, along with their families and guests.

University officials say the Golden Class recognition underscores the vital role alumni play in advancing Bluefield State’s mission and supporting future generations of students.

Members of the Class of 1976 will also have opportunities to engage with the Alumni Association and strengthen their connection to the university.
