From Faith and Football to Engineering: Albert’s Journey at Bluefield State University

For Albert Johnson, faith has always been his guiding light. As the second of nine children in a close-knit family from Pahokee, Florida, Albert grew up with big dreams but limited resources.

A first-generation college student who, as a child, was fascinated by Legos and robots, Albert knew his only path to studying engineering was through his athletic ability and the generosity of others. His passion for technology and determination set him apart from his peers.

Albert’s football skills and determination to succeed earned him a scholarship to Bluefield State University, where he is now pursuing his passion for mechanical engineering. That same skill and determination led to his membership in Gamma Beta Phi, the prestigious honor society that recognized both his athletic achievements and scholarly potential.

But it was his own resilience that truly defined his journey.

Balancing early-morning practices, late-night study sessions and his commitment to his faith hasn’t been easy, but Albert faces every challenge with perseverance and prayer. “Football taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience,” Albert shares. “But as a man of God, I’ve learned that success is about more than personal achievement. It’s about lifting others up and making a difference in your community.”

Today, football is over for Albert, and his dream is within reach. A senior, Albert is excelling in his studies and will be earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering this spring. “It’s my faith and the support of Bluefield State’s donors that remind me to keep going,” said Albert. “Without them, I wouldn’t have this opportunity to chase my dream and make a better life for my family.”
