BSC Students, Frasure-Singleton Legislative Interns, Prepare for 2020 WV Legislature’s Regular Session
Three Bluefield State College students have been selected for Frasure-Singleton Legislative Internships for the 2020 session of the West Virginia Legislature. The students, Beniamino Zappia, Alexander Brugos, and Kevin Tickle, will work with a specific state senator or delegate for one week during the 2020 session, which lasts from January 8 to March 7.
They will attend committee meetings and public hearings where legislation and issues are discussed, and they will attend floor sessions surrounded by legislators determining the fate of legislation.
Zappia, a Business major at BSC, is a participant in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange—a political and cultural exchange year between Germany and the United States. “My motivation for the Frasure-Singleton Internship Program involves expanding my knowledge and understanding of the U.S. political process,” he said. His goals—to earn a master’s degree in political science, then to work for the Department of State as a diplomat.
Brugos, a senior majoring in Business, hopes to serve on the Finance Committee. “My time as a legislative intern will provide valuable me with valuable insight into how the business world and public sector are connected,” he explained. His post-graduation plans—to pursue an MBA and become a financial advisor.
Tickle, a Criminal Justice major, looks to the internship as a learning experience. “After graduating from BSC, I plan to attend the WVU College of Law,” he noted. “During the l internship, I hope to serve within the Judiciary Committee of one of the two chambers of the legislature.”
Dr. Colin Cavell, BSC Professor of Political Science, coordinated a visit to Bluefield State College by members of the West Virginia State Legislative Internship Committee. He also serves as BSC’s campus contact for the legislative internship programs.
