Jesse Calloway

A True Bluefield Success Story

Dr. Jesse Calloway grew up poor.  He was one of six children, and when his mother died when he was eight, all the siblings moved in with an aunt and uncle who had six children of their own.   Jesse learned the meaning of hard work at an early age, mowing lawns and doing odd jobs.  In school, he became interested in electricity and electronics and received a degree as an electrical engineer from Bluefield State College.

After a brilliant career at Phillip Morris USA, and as a board member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Jesse retired as Vice President/General Manager (Processing & Manufacturing).  It was then that he found his true calling… helping others become great leaders.  Sensing a need after his time at Thurgood Marshall, Jesse developed an engineering leadership program, which he implemented in historically black colleges and universities like Bluefield State.

“My message to the young students is this… Nobody owes you anything. Do your best in every job. Learn from your mistakes and don’t look back. Find an advocate and exceed their expectations. Never compromise your integrity.”

Dr. Calloway received his PhD at Old Dominion University in Norfolk where he is now a professor and member of the distinguished Engineering Management Honor Society. You can find his latest book on Amazon.com; “All the Way to the Top: A Practical Guide for Corporate and Business Leadership.”

Dr. Jesse Calloway will be speaking on leadership and will share in a Question and Answer period today, March 22nd at 11am in Tierney Auditorium at Dickason Hall on the Bluefield State College Campus.  The public is welcome to attend.
