Bluefield State Welcomes McDowell Technical Education Center LPN Students on National Nurses Day

Bluefield State University welcomed students from the McDowell Technical Education Center Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program to campus as part of a collaborative visit hosted at the University’s Medical Education Center (MEC).

The visit, coordinated by Kelli Sarver, Professor of Nursing, highlighted the growing partnership between Bluefield State and McDowell County schools. The event coincided with National Nurses Day, offering an opportunity to recognize the vital role nurses play in communities across the region and the nation.

“This visit reflected the strength of our partnerships and our shared commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Darrin Martin, President of Bluefield State University. “On a day when we recognize the impact of nurses, it was especially meaningful to welcome students who are already taking important steps toward careers in this essential field.”

During their time on campus, students learned more about Bluefield State’s LPN to RN pathway, which provides a seamless opportunity for practical nursing graduates to continue their education and advance their careers in registered nursing.

The visit underscored Bluefield State’s continued focus on expanding access to healthcare education, strengthening regional partnerships, and supporting workforce development across southern West Virginia. It also comes at a time of continued momentum for the University, which has experienced one of the strongest enrollment growth rates among West Virginia’s public four-year institutions in recent years.

“As enrollment grows, so does the need to prepare students for high-demand fields,” Martin added. “Healthcare remains a critical workforce need in West Virginia, and Bluefield State’s nursing programs play an essential role in meeting that demand by preparing skilled, compassionate professionals ready to serve their communities.”

Bluefield State University’s nursing programs are designed to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals while providing students with the academic preparation and clinical experience needed to succeed.
