Bluefield State University Hosts “Cup of Gratitude” Reception Connecting Donors and Students
Bluefield State University welcomed donors to campus on Wednesday evening, April 8, for its “Cup of Gratitude” reception, held in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center. The event was designed to connect supporters directly with the students whose lives are impacted by their generosity.
The tea-style reception, brought together scholarship recipients and donors for meaningful, personal conversations that highlighted the transformative power of philanthropy at Bluefield State. The event underscored the University’s commitment to student success and the vital role donor support plays in expanding access to higher education.
“Events like this serve as a powerful reminder that philanthropy at Bluefield State is not just about dollars, it is about people, opportunity, and the belief in what our students can achieve,” said Bluefield State President, Dr. Darrin Martin. “Seeing those conversations unfold between our donors and students captured the very heart of what it means to be part of the Big Blue family.”

Students shared their academic journeys, personal challenges, and aspirations for the future, offering donors a firsthand look at how their support is helping remove barriers and create new opportunities. Many students spoke about the confidence and stability that scholarships provide, allowing them to focus on their studies and future careers.
“Our students carry remarkable stories of determination, resilience, and ambition,” Martin added. “Because of our supporters, they are able to pursue their education with greater confidence and fewer obstacles. That impact extends far beyond the classroom.”
The “Cup of Gratitude” reception comes at a time of continued momentum for Bluefield State University, with strong enrollment growth and ongoing investments in academic programs, student support services, and campus facilities. University leaders emphasized that donor partnerships remain central to sustaining that progress.
“As we continue to grow stronger together, our donors are helping us create pathways for success that extend into the communities our graduates will serve,” Martin said. “We are deeply grateful for their belief in our mission and their commitment to helping us Guard the Hill.”
Bluefield State University plans to continue hosting engagement opportunities that strengthen the connection between donors and students, reinforcing a shared investment in the future of the institution and its impact across the region.
