PikeView Middle School Wins Regional MathCounts Competition at Bluefield State University
PikeView Middle School won the recent MathCounts competition at Bluefield State University. Five regional middle schools (PikeView, Princeton, Logan, Glenwood, and Bluefield) took part in the competition, which began more than 30 years ago at Bluefield State.
Coached by Jean Davis, the PikeView Middle School team members were Luke Brown, Hayden Halstead, Aedon O’Quinn, and Joanna Williams. Princeton Middle finished in second place. Team members included Drake Lineberry, Thomas McKenzie, Finn Smith, and Ethan Wolfe. Logan Middle rounded out the top three teams in the competition. Coached By Velnetta Runyon, the LMS team included Zoey Adkins, Eli Engle, Gage Green, and Kylee Scott. Pikeview, Princeton, and Logan Middle teams will advance to the state competition in March.
The Glenwood team, coached by Julie Miller, included Kyle Reed, Felix Taylor, Brayden Ratliff, and Whitney White. Harper Gillespie, Jelani Neely, Aiden Owens, and Liliana Romano represented Bluefield Middle, coached by Ivory Rowe.
Five individual students will also move on to the state competition. They are Liliana Romano (Bluefield), Felix Taylor (Glenwood), Carson Hale (Logan), Abigail Haugen (Logan), and Kyle Reed (Glenwood).

Bluefield State University faculty members Roy Pruett and James Pruett, as well as Elizabeth Pruett, have been organizers and co-directors of the Mercer County MATHCOUNTS event since its establishment 34 years ago.
