BSC Student Patrice Sterling Selected for Prestigious Innovation Academy Internship

Bluefield State College student Patrice Sterling has been selected to participate in the New Technologists innovation academy.  The virtual academy was developed for first- and second-year college students interested in pursuing degrees in technology.  Sterling is one of 100 students chosen from the 2000 plus applicants for this year’s paid internship program, created through a partnership between Microsoft and Cyborg Mobile, a technology solutions company.

Sterling, a Kingston, Jamaica resident and a freshman at BSC, is Computer Science major.  A Passport to College Scholar and BSC Honors Scholar, she is excited about the experience provided by the seven-week academy.

“This opportunity will provide me with hands-on experience in the tech world and that is what motivated me to apply for this internship,” she said.  “We will be creating a mobile app from the ground up.  I will be working with professional Product Managers and Software Engineers from Microsoft and Cyborg, who will be our mentors for the duration of the program.”

“We will learn to use different tools, software, and program languages.  We’ll be placed into student teams to design and develop a mobile app and will be exposed to more advanced technological tools and software that we aren’t exposed to in the classroom.”

Sterling observed that the internship would develop her innovation potential and appreciation for the multi-layered benefits of team building.   “The experience will also add to my understanding of the project management and software engineering fields,” she summarized.

The seven-week paid internship begins on June 21.
