Bluefield State College Receives $1.685 Million in Federal CARES Act Funding
Bluefield State College will receive $1.685 million in additional funding to help ensure learning continues during the coronavirus national emergency. These funds are in addition to Federal Cares Act Funds received earlier by BSC—monies used to launch the Bluefield State College Emergency Relief program for students.
The $1.685 million that BSC will receive was part of a nearly $1.4 billion in additional CARES Act Relief Funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, and institutions serving low-income students. U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made the announcement April 30.
“Bluefield State College is extremely grateful for this additional funding which will permit very timely and meaningful support for our institution and our students,” noted BSC President Robin Capehart. “We are now awaiting further direction from the U.S. Department of Education establishing guidelines for how the funds can be used.”
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos observed, “The Administration is committed to the success of HBCUs, Minority Serving Institutions, and the students they serve,” Secretary DeVos said. “Each institution is an important part of the country’s educational fabric. By Providing additional support to these important institutions, we can help ensure they emerge from this crisis stronger than before.”
