Bluefield Middle School Wins Regional MATHCOUNTS Event at BSC
Bluefield Middle School won today’s MATHCOUNTS Regional competition at Bluefield State College. Five regional middle school teams took part in the competition, now in its 32nd year at BSC. Glenwood School, Princeton Middle School, and Pikeview Middle School will advance to the state MATHCOUNTS competition, later this year.
Roy Pruett, BSC Engineering Technology faculty member, has coordinated the regional competition since its inception. He is assisted by his son, James Pruett, BSC Visiting Instructor of Engineering Technology.
“We’ve seen a steady improvement in the math skills of this region’s students in the competition,” Roy Pruett observed. “Over the past decade, the winner of this region’s competition has finished among the top teams at the state level.
Anthony Underwood, BSC’s Chief Admissions Counselor, announced at the MATHCOUNTS award program that each of the top ten students in the individual competition, along with members of the top team finishers, would receive a $500 scholarship to attend Bluefield State College. The BSC Admissions staff assisted with hosting the event.
