News Bits, Bytes, and Teasers, week ending May 17
May 11-12—The BSC men’s tennis team won the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA D-II national championship “Sweet 16” for the eighth consecutive year.
May 13-15—The BSC baseball team advanced to the semi-final round of the USCAA baseball national championship, winning two games in the double elimination tournament.
May 13—The 33rd Annual Klingensmith Cup Golf Tournament was played at the Wolf Creek Golf Course in Bastian, Virginia. This event is sponsored by the Bluefield State College Foundation and the BSC School of Engineering Technology and Computer Science.
May 14—President Robin Capehart spoke to the Beckley Rotary Club during the organization’s weekly meeting at the Historic Black Knight Country Club. His presentation received coverage in the Beckley Register-Herald and on regional tv stations WOAY and CBS59.
May 15– The Bluefield State College robotics team and team director/BSC faculty member Joey Hazelwood took part in the fourth annual SWVA Economic Forum at the University of Virginia-Wise campus. BSC Robotics showcased its IGVC 2018 world championship autonomous robot during a “technology zone” at the Forum, which brought together regional developers, educators, business owners, and others to focus upon economic development throughout the region.
May 16—President Capehart was interviewed by CBS59 tv and discussed the anticipated return (Fall 2020 Semester) of on-campus student housing at Bluefield State.
Coming Up:
May 18—Bluefield State College will serve as the host site for the 13th annual Mine Rescue Competition. Representatives of the Mine Safety and Health Administration will operate an on-site command center during the competition. The Center for Applied Research and Technology, Inc. (CART) has been centrally involved in the event since its creation.
May 19—The Bluefield State College Renaissance Celebration will provide southern West Virginians an opportunity to enjoy fellowship, good food, and good music, May 19, 2 pm-5 pm at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center. The Renaissance Celebration will reach out to those we serve locally in our Black and faith-based communities who may be underserved or underrepresented— African-Americans, non-traditional adults, first-generation and/or low-income. Attendees can learn more about their post-secondary education options and the resources available to make earning a degree possible.
May 20—BSC’s first Summer Session and Ten-Week Term classes begin.
June 6-8—The BSC Lady Blues Instructional Volleyball Camp will be offered at the Ned Shott Gymnasium. Event information can be obtained by contacting Andrea Oakes, camp director, at aoakes@bluefieldstate.edu or calling 304-327-4263.
June 10—The annual Bluefield State College Athletics Golf Tournament will be held at Fincastle on the Mountain. Entry fee is $75/golfer, $300/four-golfer team. Contact BSC AD John Lewis (304-327-4191, jlewis@bluefieldstate.edu) to register.
