Maya Angelou PCS Students Visit Bluefield State College
Eleven students from the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, DC visited Bluefield State College today in an initiative designed to encourage and assist them in the pursuit of a college education at BSC.
BSC alumnus Greg Aiken, a faculty member and coach at Maya Angelou PCS, collaborated with the College to arrange the trip from Washington to the Bluefield State campus, where they were greeted by Dr. Jo-Ann Robinson, BSC VP for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.
The students toured the campus with Ansel Ponder, BSC Admissions Counselor, visited a class with Dr. Tamara Ferguson, BSC Professor of English, enjoyed lunch and attended a baseball game.
Aiken, a 2012 alumnus of BSC, told his students, “The faculty and staff at Bluefield State are going to know your name and help you at every step along the way. They’ll be with you here and be ready to help even after you graduate.”
Bluefield State College is a participating institution in the DC Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) program, through which students from the greater Washington, DC region are eligible to receive up to $10,000 toward the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at qualifying colleges and universities.
As a historical footnote, 24 years earlier, the late Maya Angelou traveled to BSC to deliver the featured address during the College’s centennial celebration.
