Bluefield State Bio Medical Club Hosts Science Bowl!
How do you go about finding a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)? That’s what guest speaker, Dr. Christyl Johnson, Deputy Director for Technology and Research Investments, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, will share with students this Wednesday March 29th, 2017 at the Basic Science Auditorium on the campus of Bluefield State College.
High School Students from across the area will attend a one-day conference filled with speakers and a science trivia competition. In addition, BSC Deans, admissions and student organizations will host information booths to help guide students towards their career goals.
The entire event is possible because of a $5,000 grant requested by Benjamin Duncan, an Undergrad Student at BSC and member of the BioMedical Club. The grant was received through the Governors STEM initiative Mini Grant Program. “Ben had the resourcefulness to seek out funds from the Governor’s STEM initiative and designed a project that would appeal specifically to high school students,” noted Dr. Sarah Holguin, BioMedical Club co-advisor. “We’re all very proud of him.”
Other speakers include Debbie Curry, Marshall University Rural Outreach Director “A Diversity of Careers in STEM”, and Dr Marsha Krotseng, President BSC. The final segment including a science panel with local scientist and Dr. Johnson’s speech will be open to the public from 12:15 – 2:15.
