Available Scholarships
The AKA—HBCU Endowed Scholarship Fund
Applicants must be completing or have completed high school successfully with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicant must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at Bluefield State University or accepted as a full-time student at Bluefield State University. Applicant must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States. As permitted by law, preference to African-American students, under-represented students, students who are first generation college applicants; students with significant financial need and academic promise; and students with proven community volunteerism and service.

Audrey Mayberry
Preference for award shall be given to a Junior or Senior at Bluefield State University who is a graduate of Bluefield or Princeton High School and who has a college GPA of at least 2.5 or better.
Benjamin & Almeta Martin Endowed Scholarship
Preferred Education Major; if education major is not available, other majors would qualify. GPA of 3.0 or higher. Reflects potential academic promise. Must have financial need
BOG Auxiliary
An Academic Tuition and/or Fee Waiver awarded to entering freshmen, and transfer students based on academic excellence as determined by ACT/SAT score and GPA.
BOG Tuition Employee Dependent
Tuition and fee waivers are awarded to the spouses or dependents of full-time regular faculty and staff. Renewal of these awards is dependent upon remaining in good academic standing.
BOG Tuition Waiver Academic
An Academic Tuition and/or Fee Waiver awarded to entering freshmen, and continuing students based on academic excellence, exceptional talents or skills, or financial need. Pursuant to the statute, no student may hold an undergraduate fee waiver for more than eight (8) semesters.
BOG Tuition Waiver Athletic
An Athletic Tuition and/or Fee Waiver shall be awarded based on a student’s athletic ability and shall be renewed based on the student’s continued NCAA eligibility, participation in sports and contribution to the associated athletic activity as recommended by the respective coaches.
BOG Tuition Waiver Foster Care
Tuition and fees waivers for high school graduates in foster care are awarded upon presentation of legal documentation establishing foster care status. The student must be in foster care or other residential care for at least one year prior to the waiver award.
BOG Tuition Waiver Mil Depend
Tuition and mandatory fees shall be waived for a state resident that has been honorably discharged from any branch of the United States armed forces if that resident has received the Medal of Honor or a Purple Heart Medal. The amount of the waiver shall be the charges that exceed the total amount of any state and federal education benefits, grants or scholarships received by the resident.

High school graduate of Tazewell County, VA or McDowell County, WV. Successful completion of 24 hours of college level course work. Minimum GPA of 2.5. Student must be in a declared major. Demonstrated financial need as determined by BSU Office of Financial Aid. Willingness to perform community service.

Education Major, Demonstrated financial need, maintain a 2.5 GPA, preference to minority students. General scholarship awarded to Bluefield State University students.

McGee Scholarship
Must be considered a resident of the State of West Virginia for the purpose of admission. Graduates of this program agree to work in the State of West Virginia for two years (24 months) following their graduation from Bluefield State University. Applicants to the McGee Foundation Scholarships must have completed the admissions process for Bluefield State University and be conditionally or fully admitted to the University. Applicants to the McGee Foundation Scholarships must have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) and must accept any federal or state grants offered by that process. All McGee Foundation Scholars will be required to participate in the University’s student success program by signing a student success contract and developing a student success plan to assist them in maintaining good academic standing. This will include regular meetings with the Academic Success Center staff. All McGee Community Scholars will be required to volunteer a minimum of 75 hours per semester (an average of five hours per week) for the duration of their scholarship, and volunteer with an actual organization (not an individual). Each McGee Community Scholar will be assigned a mentor who is a professional leader from a community in Southern West Virginia, who will meet with the scholar a minimum of 10 hours per year. Each McGee Community Scholar must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress, as defined by the Office of Financial Aid, which requires a 2.0 cumulative GPA and that you successfully complete 67% of all credit hours you begin.
Cardwell Family Endowed Scholarship
Rising junior or senior. Involvement in extracurricular and volunteer activities. GPA of 2.75 or higher.
Carter Family Foundation
Student majoring in Education, Preference given to students from Raleigh County, must have a financial need.
Cole Harley-Davidson Scholarship
Business Administration student. Individual or family income is 125% or less of the federal poverty level. Resident of West Virginia. Ability to succeed in college.
CONSOL Energy Scholarship in Engineering Technology
Full-time student in Engineering Technology. Minimum GPA of 3.0 or better. Career interest in energy fields. Resident of Virginia or West Virginia.
Stelio and Betty Tracy Corte Endowed Scholarship
Must have financial need. Met all BSU entrance criteria and qualifications.
Craddock Scholarship Award
Award is based on financial need and academic achievement. Preference to students from Appalachia pursuing a B.S. degree. Enrollment in BS program: Architectural, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering Technology, Physical Science, or Pre- Medicine, Computer Science, Nursing, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics. Minimum 2.5 GPA, preference given to residents of West Virginia.
Credit Bureau of the Virginias
Eligible students reside within a nine-county area surrounding the College. Focuses on financially needy students with minimum GPA of 2.0.
Douglas F. Crickmer Memorial Scholarship
Mining Engineer Technology student or similar Eng. Tech program. Support needs of the mining industry. 2.5 GPA or higher.

Graduating senior in Baccalaureate degree program. Displayed community service involvement while a student at BSU.

Hamilton Hatter Alumni Endowed Scholarship
Underrepresented student who is aspiring to have a career in research. Parents are BSU Alumni. Minimum 3.0 GPA.
Frank Hart Endowed Scholarship in Engineering Technology
Resident of West Virginia or Virginia. Maintaining 3.0 GPA
William S. Height Scholarship
Financial need. Major in Engineering Technology or Computer Science.
Health Science Waiver
Health Sciences and Technology Awards (HSTA) may be awarded to students certified by the state HSTA coordinator as completing the required curriculum in high school. The award shall be a Tuition Waiver, the amount determined by the tuition component of the fees charged to in-state students. Recipients shall maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average.
Holyfield Endowment Scholarship

Tom Joyner Scholarship
As permitted by law, an African-American student who has successfully completed 24 credit hrs. Must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. Fulfillment of admissions requirements of BSU Admissions’ Office. Declared a major in Education, Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. Must have financial need as determined by BSU Office of Financial Aid. Willingness to perform community service.
Prema Natarajan Krishnan Scholarship in Nursing
Non-traditional student in the second or subsequent year of the nursing program. West Virginia resident from a rural county. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Krotseng Annual Scholarship
Rising senior or 5th year student Economic hardship verified by Financial Aid GPA in major and overall GPA of 2.0 or higher that would meet graduation requirements. Within 30 hours of completing degree.

Lawson Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students from southwest Virginia who have financial need and show academic ability to succeed. Students transferring from Wytheville Community College to BSU, Full time student with at least 15 credit hours, Maintain minimum 3.0 GPA, must advance a grade level each academic year.

John and Elisabeth MacClarence Scholarship
Declared major in the School of Education. Minimum GPA of 3.2. Resident of WV or an out-of-state bordering county.
Massey Scholarship
Enrolled in Engineering Technology programs, devoting career to coal mining area of Southern West Virginia, South Western Virginia, or Eastern Kentucky. Full time student with minimum of 15 credit hours per semester, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester. Must advance a grade level each year.
McConnell Family Scholarship
Resident of West Virginia. Individual or family income of 125% or less of federal poverty guideline, demonstrated ability to succeed in college.
Martha and Mark Oblinger Scholarship
Awarded to students from Tazewell County, Virginia, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are active in their local Christian church. Must have financial need.
Nicolas McCroskey
The student must demonstrate strong work ethic. Must show ability to succeed in college and be of good character by helping and being a friend to others.
Billy G. Moore Scholarship
Student pursuing a career in teaching, minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrated financial need. Appalachian area residency for at least 5 years or must have financial need. African American descent.
Dr. Patricia A. Mulvey Scholarship
Resident of WV living in Bluefield, WV. Member of the Pi Gamma Mu National Honor Society. Must be a student in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. Must be one of BSU’s best students who is interested in attending graduate school. Must show need for support to continue on to graduate school. The scholarship could help defray the expenses associated with students taking tests to apply to graduate school, particularly the cost associated with taking the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test.
Nannie Pearl Walls Endowed Scholarship
Student majoring in business. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have financial need.
Neighborhood Investment Scholarships
Awarded to students based on financial need. Individual or family income is 125% or less of the federal poverty level, resident of West Virginia, ability to succeed in college. Must be a student with a documented disability or seeks through his/her studies to identify and remove barriers affecting persons with disabilities.
W. Paul Cole, Jr. Leadership Scholarship
Student in his or her 3rd or 4th year of the business program. Major in Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, or Management.
Pocahontas Electrical and Mining Scholarship
Major in Mining, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology. GPA 3.0, first generation college student.
Roy Pruett, Jr. Scholarship for Electrical Engineers
Must meet qualification standards for the NIP for the state of WV. Individual or family income is 124% or less of the federal poverty level. Resident of West Virginia. Ability to succeed in college. Must be a student in the Electrical Engineering program or a student athlete

Baseball student athletes at the discretion of Head Baseball Coach Scholarship awarded for no more than eight semesters.
Greg Shrewsberry Memorial Scholarship
A graduate of Bluefield High School, student demonstrates good character by participation in school and community activities, helping and being a friend to others. The applicant’s grade and standardized test scores must meet the requirements of Bluefield State University.
Ralph Patsel
Rising sophomore or junior. Possessing qualities of good character. Meets requirements for Phi Eta Sigma. 4. GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients are awarded a $250 book scholarship to be used in the BSU bookstore.
Charles Smothers
Student entering criminal justice at BSU preferably from Mercer or McDowell Counties, Non traditional student planning to stay in WV and work in law enforcement specifically drug task force related work, willing to work with the drug task force as a mentor to the student during their studies at BSU.

MacClarence Teacher Testing Scholarship
Graduation from a high school in Mercer or contiguous county, minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have financial need. Passing score on each test, enrollment in BSU School of Education.
Luther and Mary Ida Vandross Scholarship
Must attend a 4-year HBC or University. Must be in good standing at the college/university. Must be in 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of study leading to an undergraduate degree. Must have financial need.
Bartlett – Welcker Scholarship
Woman over 25 years of age. West Virginia resident. Successful Completion of 1 year of college; minimum 24 credit hours and GPA 2.0. Beginning second year as a full time student with minimum of 12 credit hours.
Wellington-Swindall
Book scholarship. Minority students who show great academic promise.
Jerolee White Scholarship
Non-traditional nursing student in the second or subsequent year of the nursing program. Must be a WV resident from a rural county. Minimum GPA: 3.0.
West Virginia Society of Washington DC Book Scholarship
Freshman student; alternating one male and one female. Legal resident of WV or the son or daughter of a native of West Virginia. Must have financial need. Must have high academic promise.
Gopal ParGopal Pardasani
- Individual or family income is 125 percent or less of the federal poverty level
- Resident of West Virginia, and
- Ability to succeed in college.
- Must have a 2.00-2.50 GPA
The BSU Vice-President of Student Affairs shall determine the awarding of this scholarship.
The Guyton Family Scholarship
The Guyton Family Scholarship will be awarded each year as permitted by law to an African-American student who meets the following criteria:
- Major in Education or Engineering
- Minimum high school GPA of 3.5 and/or a minimum college GPA of3.0
Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or professor with their applications.
The funds shall be controlled and invested in accordance with the Bluefield State College Foundation’s Investment and Spending Policies. The BSU Foundation Officers shall determine the awarding of this scholarship, which will be a percentage of the principal as established by the Bluefield State College Foundation Board

- This is scholarship in nonrenewable to the same student.
The BSU Vice-President of Student Affairs shall determine the awarding of this scholarship.

Applications for the scholarship are to include three letters ofrecommendation from faculty, staff and/or members of the community. The selection committee will include representatives from the Bluefield State College Foundation along with John Cardwell or his designee.
