BSC’s students access the world through languages and cultural studies
BSC’s mission of preparing students for global citizenship will be realized with new languages and cultural studies offerings in 2021-22.
Awarded three Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants by the US Department of State, Bluefield State College can now offer students Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian as well as the opportunity to study the cultures, norms, traditions and peoples of Brazil, Morocco, and Russia.
Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants El Mehdi El Bouzkri of Morocco, Murilo de Quadro Jesus of Brazil, and Yekaterina Shemyakina of Russia will teach in-person language and cultural studies classes, which are also open to non-BSC students.
“Bluefield State College is privileged to have the Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants to teach these languages to our students. Languages open up new worlds of experience and allow one to gain confidence while traveling abroad and also when visitors from other countries grace us with their presence. Languages promote great understanding and pave the path toward co-existence, peace, trade, scientific discoveries, and harmonious communities,” summarized BSC Provost and VP for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Ted A. Lewis.
Stated BSC Director of International Initiatives Dr. Sudhakar R Jamkhandi: “For the past 15 years, Bluefield State College has been at the forefront of providing substantive international experiences to its students. These courses will help our students gain increased awareness of international cultures, one of the academic objectives recently adopted by the college’s Board of Governors.”
