Bluefield State Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Make Historic Debut in CIAA Tournament
Bluefield State University’s Men’s and Women’s basketball teams are set to participate in their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament since rejoining the conference. The 2024 Food Lion CIAA Men’s and Women’s basketball tournament will take place from February 26 to March 3 at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
Bluefield State University, formerly known as Bluefield State College, was a member of the CIAA from 1932 to 1955 before joining the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). After competing as an independent NCAA DII member, the university returned to the CIAA on July 1st, 2023.
The CIAA tournament has a rich history, with the first men’s basketball tournament occurring in 1946. Bluefield State was a member at the time, but only the top eight teams were invited to participate. Over the years, the tournament has moved through different cities, including Baltimore and Greensboro. It was hosted in Charlotte for 15 years before relocating to Baltimore in 2019. The current deal extends the tournament’s stay in Baltimore until 2026.
Bluefield State’s return to the CIAA tournament is a significant moment for the university. The teams are excited to showcase their skills and compete against other CIAA teams. It represents the university’s commitment to excellence in athletics and its rich athletic heritage.
