Bluefield State Partners With Brushfork Elementary in Dr. Seuss-Themed Event that Engages Students and Families
Local elementary school students and their parents enjoyed an entertaining and educational Dr. Seuss-themed program recently through the collaborative efforts Bluefield State College and Brushfork Elementary School. The event, “All the Places You’ll Go,” marked the return of the programs between BSC and Brushfork Elementary, the College’s education partner in the Bluefield State Consortium Professional Development Schools.
Brushfork Elementary Principal Dr. Shellie Simpson, Brushfork faculty and staff, and BSC Education students and faculty dressed in Dr. Seuss-character costumes as they greeted Brushfork students and families, who remained in their cars during a drive-by parade. Each student received nutritious snacks and a Dr. Seuss book, while parents received information packets that detailed activities that parents and children can do together to promote educational excellence.
“Brushfork Elementary School provides very important opportunities for Bluefield State College’s Education candidates,” noted Dr. Shelia Sargent-Martin, Dean of the BSC School of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences. “We are excited to be able to resume the engagement activities with Brushfork Elementary after such programs had been paused for several months because of the pandemic.”
“These events provide opportunities for our pre-service teachers to see the value in family engagement and building relationships between the school and community,” she added.
