Why Big Blue
What Sets B-State Apart
Bluefield State University is one of only two HBCUs in West Virginia and is recognized as a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader, connecting students to global academic and research opportunities. With a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students learn in an environment where professors know their names, not just their ID numbers, and are actively engaged in their success.
The university’s student body includes individuals from more than 10 countries and 30 states, pursuing degrees in high-demand fields such as STEM, nursing, business, and education. Nearly half of Bluefield State students are enrolled in STEM and related programs, including allied health and engineering technology.
Students are already contributing to meaningful work → presenting research to legislatures during Capitol Research Day and partnering with other universities on initiatives like Million Hearts.

Learn by Doing
At Bluefield State, your education connects directly to practical experience. Students work alongside faculty, apply what they learn in hands-on settings, and build skills that carry into their careers. The kind that shows up on a résumé.
That experience is personal by design. Small classes mean you engage directly with faculty who are invested in your progress and expect you to succeed.
A Place Worth Calling Home
Bluefield State is set in the terraced hills of Bluefield, WV — a small, welcoming city with easy access to outdoor recreation, including Pinnacle Rock State Park and the Hatfield-McCoy trails. It’s the kind of place where students actually know their neighbors, not just their classmates.
