Purpose:

This position is responsible for assisting students to become independent learners by helping them master study skills, learn base content knowledge, and/or learn and understand new concepts. Tutors will also promote learning through identifying individualized learning styles and learning processes for each student. Tutors will also mentor students through providing advice and guidance as well as feedback to students.  

Individuals holding this position must be able to solve on the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Semester GPA: 3.0 / Cumulative GPA: 3.0
  • Received an “A” in the courses to be tutored (or professor approval to tutor the course)
  • One semester completed at a Bluefield State University campus
  • Level 1 Tutor Certification -provided through the College Reading and Learning Association by department after hire

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Mandatory six-hour training for nationally recognized Level 1 Tutor Certification
  • Provide individual and small group tutoring to participants both in-person and online
  • Meet with participants on a regular basis to cover course content, improve study skills and develop learning strategies
  • Tutor sessions cover but are not limited to assignment review, reading assignment review, identify test questions, test prep, work through solutions to problems, organize and formulate writing ideas, information drills, and goal setting
  • Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions, timesheets and monthly reports
  • Measure and document student progression and reporting any issue
  • Build rapport and trust with participants
  • Become a support system for participants
  • Refer participants for other services as needed
  • Keep open line of communication with professional staff regarding any student issues
  • Additional duties as assigned may include office assistance, answer phones, copy materials and other light office duties

  • Arrive on time and have regular attendance
  • Take advantage of services to develop staff development and success
  • Adhere to Academic Success Center rules, regulations and code of conduct as outlined

Criteria for Success:

Tutor staff evaluation process consists of monthly participant evaluation and semester end supervisor evaluation. Evaluation measured by the following objectives:

  • Ability to allow the student to be participatory in the tutoring process

Position Description: Campus Photographer Intern. A campus photographer at Bluefield State University would likely be responsible for capturing photographs of events, people, and places on campus. These photographs would be used for a variety of purposes, such as promoting the university through marketing materials, creating a visual record of the university’s history, and documenting important events and milestones. The campus photographer may also work with other members of the university’s communications or marketing team to create and execute photography projects. Additionally, the photographer may also be responsible for maintaining and updating the university’s photo library.

  • Photographing events on campus such as lectures, sporting events, and performances.
  • Capturing candid shots of students, faculty, and staff in their daily activities.
  • Creating portraits of faculty and staff members for use in university publications and on the university’s website.
  • Documenting important milestones and events in the university’s history.
  • Collaborating with the university’s communications or marketing team to create photography projects that promote the university.
  • Maintaining and updating the university’s photo library, ensuring that all photographs are properly labeled, cataloged, and stored.

Position Description: The marketing & social media manager will serve as support staff for the Office of Marketing & Media Relations. As the Marketing & Social Media Manager for Bluefield State University, he will be responsible for managerial duties such as budgeting in conjunction with the CMO, social media management, publishing content, customer care, and data analysis for all social accounts in our office. This position will also have the creative autonomy to produce content that positively impacts our community such as identifying students to perform social media takeovers. As such, this will give students practical experience on documenting, managing, and analyzing social platforms, as well as determining if our digital strategy if successful.
Goals and Expectations: The marketing & social media manager to learn the importance of teamwork/collaboration, effective data analysis, and marketing strategies in a fast-paced environment. Service request happen weekly from various departments in which they will be expected to help prioritize. The role will also be expected to learn and apply marketing language and concepts such as CPI, landing page, content marketing strategy to efficiently understand marketing as a real-world practitioner.

Position Description: Student Sports Information Director. Their role is to assist the full-time sports information director (SID) in promoting the school’s athletic teams and events to the media and the public. This may include writing and distributing press releases, maintaining the athletic department’s website and social media accounts, and coordinating interviews and photo shoots with athletes and coaches. SIDs also help manage game-day operations and statistics. They also help to create and maintain statistical information, game programs, and other publications.

Position Description: Participate in peer mentor training and meetings. Assist first-year students with their transition to college by acquainting them with the university, helping them connect with peers, promoting participation in campus activities, instilling a knowledge of available resources, increasing retention rates for students, instilling an understanding of the student handbook, courses, procedures, and institutional requirements, and participate in peer mentor activities including outreach and special programs. Participate in one group activity monthly each semester. Meet with each mentee at least once a month and contact mentees by phone at\ least twice per month and by email at least once per month. Maintain record of all contact. Make referrals as needed. Submit monthly highlights to program coordinator. Abide by the student handbook and policies of the university.

Position Description: The maintenance department has an opening for an individual that can wash and clean the fleet vehicles. They would also need to be able to operate Excel and Word to complete necessary records for the fleet vehicles.

The student assistants must have skills to handle a wide array of responsibilities. Scheduling is flexible, but a commitment of 20 hours/week is expected.
