Carolyn Kirby serves as the Director of the Academic Success Center overseeing all tutoring services and academic support services on campus that promote retention and graduation. Additionally, Carolyn serves as the ADA coordinator advocating for students with disabilities and providing classroom and other accommodations for students where needed.
Carolyn Kirby has worked as a student affairs professional for over three decades and began her education at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. It was while at Gardner-Webb that she got her first experience working in student affairs as a Resident Assistant. After a five-year career as a Resident Director, Carolyn attended Radford University where she received her Master’s Degree in Counseling and Human Development with a concentration in College Student Personnel Services. Carolyn has a experience in residence life, academic advising, counseling, student activities, intramurals, teaching first-year experience courses, orientation, and overseeing academic support services. Carolyn is deeply committed to assisting students in achieving their academic goals and firmly believes in putting students first and always leaving things better than you found them.
Carolyn currently serves on a number of committees at Bluefield State University including the retention committee, the CARES team, and the CNN committee. She also oversees the management of the University’s early alert system, CRM Advise, and the online tutoring program, TUTOR.COM. During her almost 28 years at BSU, Carolyn has been awarded the Presidential Mentor Award, the John Cardwell Cup, the Greg Shrewsbury Staff Leadership Award, the Blue Star Award, the Flame Award, and the Staff of the Year Award.
