B-State Awards 348 Degrees During 2026 Commencement Ceremony Led by Student Voices

Bluefield State University celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2026 during its commencement ceremony Saturday morning at the Brushfork Armory, awarding 348 degrees to 307 graduates.

The graduating class included five valedictorians, each earning a perfect 4.0 GPA, and one salutatorian with a 3.97 GPA. In a departure from tradition, the University’s five valedictorians delivered the ceremony’s featured reflections and remarks in place of a keynote speaker, offering personal perspectives on perseverance, growth, and the Bluefield State experience.

Bluefield State President, Dr. Darrin Martin told graduates the day represented more than the completion of a degree program.

“Today you leave Bluefield State University with knowledge, skills, and a degree,” Martin said. “But more importantly, you leave with something greater. You leave with the responsibility to use what you have learned to make the world better.”

Throughout his remarks, Martin encouraged graduates to embrace resilience, integrity, and lifelong learning as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

“Failure is not the opposite of success. Failure is part of success,” Martin said. “If you fall, learn something from the fall. Then stand back up.”

Martin also reminded graduates that character and attitude will play a defining role in their future success.

“Your degree opens the first door,” he said. “Your character determines whether the next doors open.”

The ceremony included the participation of members of the Bluefield State University Board of Governors, faculty, staff, family members and friends celebrating the accomplishments of the graduating class.

Dr. Martin concluded the ceremony by encouraging graduates to remember their experiences and connections at Bluefield State as they move forward.

“Remember the friendships you built. Remember the professors who challenged you. Remember the moment you realized you were capable of more than you once believed,” Martin said. “Remember to Guard The HILL.”
