Bluefield State Nursing Students Partner with Ohio State University for Million Hearts Initiative

Bluefield State University Community Health nursing students are partnering this semester with the Ohio State University College of Nursing as part of the national Million Hearts initiative, a public health effort aimed at preventing one million heart attacks and strokes over five years.

Led by Cheryl Belcher, Professor of Nursing at Bluefield State University, the collaboration places students on the front lines of cardiovascular prevention in their own communities.

In the United States, an adult dies from a cardiovascular event approximately every 34 seconds. The Million Hearts initiative focuses on reducing that number through improved blood pressure control, cholesterol management, smoking cessation, stress management, and increased physical activity.

As part of the program, Bluefield State nursing students will conduct blood pressure screenings and provide lifestyle education to 240 adults in their communities. The initiative emphasizes prevention, awareness, and empowering individuals to take an active role in managing their heart health.

“This experience allows our students to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful, community-based settings,” said Bluefield State University President, Dr. Darrin Martin. “They are not only strengthening their clinical skills, but also helping individuals better understand their personal risk factors and make informed decisions about their health.”

The partnership reflects Bluefield State University’s ongoing commitment to workforce-aligned education and service to the region. By engaging directly with community members, students gain practical experience while contributing to improved public health outcomes.

Belcher will also share periodic information and resources throughout the semester to help individuals learn practical steps to reduce their risk of cardiovascular events.
