Bluefield Celebrates Black History Month 2026

Bluefield State University will observe Black History Month 2026 with a series of educational and community-focused programs throughout February, organized by the University’s Black History Committee.

Black History Month Events:

Saturday, Feb. 7:
  • 12:00 PM I CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER
    • African American Cultural Heritage Tour | Explore Bluefield’s historic African American Northside–East End district, highlighting its cultural and historical significance.
  • 2:00 PM / 4:00 PM
    • Greek Night | During home basketball games at Ned Shott Gymnasium, recognizing historically Black fraternities and sororities. The women’s basketball team will face Bowie State University at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 13:
  • 12:00 PM
    • Heart Health Workshop | In the Jefferson Student Center. Open to the public, the workshop will focus on heart health awareness in the African American community as part of American Heart Month.
Saturday, Feb. 21:
  • 12:00 PM
    • 3rd Annual Black History Month Luncheon | In the Jefferson Student Center. The event will include a catered meal, a guest speaker, live music, interactive Black History trivia with prizes, and the presentation of the 3rd Annual Community Engagement Award.
    • Early bird tickets are $25, and $30 after Feb. 11. Tickets are available here.
Friday, Feb. 27:
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • 1st Annual Black History Month Student Fair | in the Jefferson Student Center. Students from schools across Mercer County will present Black History Month projects to a judging panel. Participants will receive recognition and participatory awards, with top projects placed and awarded.
Saturday, Feb. 28:
  • 10:00 AM
    • The observance concludes Saturday, Feb. 28, with a second African American Cultural Heritage Tour.

Throughout February, banners honoring individuals who have made significant local and national contributions will be displayed across campus.
