Bluefield State Hosts Inaugural Biz Bash for Cole College of Business

Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University hosted a successful fundraiser this evening in support of the W. Paul Cole, Jr. College of Business, attracting a vibrant crowd of alumni, local business and community leaders, and students. The event, held at the Club on the Green raised money to enhance programs, provide scholarships, and foster collaboration between the business community and the business school.

The Big Blue Biz Bash fundraiser is a critical effort to support the growing needs of the business school as it continues to provide students with cutting-edge education and real-world experiences that prepare them for success in today’s rapidly evolving business environment.

The funds raised will be used to expand student scholarship opportunities and invest in research and technology, including an immersive business simulation suite, that mimics real-life economic conditions and customer behavior.

In his opening remarks, Interim President Dr. Darrin Martin highlighted the importance of the business school’s role in shaping future leaders and driving economic growth in the region. He expressed gratitude to the event attendees and donors, emphasizing the impact their contributions will have on the students, faculty, and the broader community.

“We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support from our alumni, local business partners, and community members,” said Dr. Martin. “This event ensures that our students will continue to receive high-quality education and hands-on learning experiences, equipping them to become the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.”

Their journey serves as an inspiration to the entire BSU community and beyond, demonstrating that with hard work and collaboration, anything is possible.

A highlight of the evening was addressed by current students, Christian Yates and Alex Ramsey, members of the school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Collegiate Chapter which recently returned from the National FBLA Conference with two national wins. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the chapter, which was only established in September 2023.  “The FBLA chapter’s accomplishments highlight the power of student leadership, dedication, and the support of dedicated faculty members,” said FBLA advisor Dr. Tabitha Young.  “Their journey serves as an inspiration to the entire BSU community and beyond, demonstrating that with hard work and collaboration, anything is possible.”

The Paul and Carol Cole Foundation along with several local businesses and individuals generously donated to help sponsor the event, showcasing the strong ties between the university and the community.

The fundraiser marks an exciting step forward for the business school, which continues to build strong partnerships with the local business community, provide innovative academic programs, and contribute to regional economic development.

Speaking on behalf of the Cole Family, Charlie Cole said a thriving local economy relies on a steady pipeline of talented and skilled professionals. “The Cole College of Business fosters innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship, leading to new businesses and startups that create jobs and drive economic growth for Bluefield.”

The college was named for long-time business and community leader W. Paul Cole, Jr., who served Bluefield and West Virginia in many roles, including as Bluefield’s longest-serving mayor.
