External Scholarship Opportunities for Students

Bluefield State provides access to a variety of external scholarships designed to help students offset the cost of their education. These opportunities come from organizations outside the university and include awards for different interests, fields of study, and achievements.

2026 The Dependent Scholarship

Eligibility:

  • This scholarship is only open to Active Duty military personnel, Veterans, or children/dependents of an Active Duty personnel or Veteran.
  • The scholarship is open to any current high school senior, vocational student, college student, graduate student, or a Veteran who is a legal resident of the United States residing in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia.
  • Students must be enrolled in a vocational program or two to a five-year post-secondary institution for the upcoming Fall semester or be a veteran.
  • Employees of Fight4Vets, their immediate families (parent, child, sibling, and spouse), and persons living in the same households as such individuals (whether related or not), are not eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Candidates for this scholarship should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and good overall academic standing.

Essay Requirements: The candidate must submit a 750 – 1,000 word essay response to the prompt: How has the military positively shaped you, whether from serving or growing up in a military family or being the spouse of someone in the military?

Success Through Academic Research Scholarship (STARS)

During this two-year program, you will
receive:
  • Up to $36,000/year in tuition
    assistance
  • $32,000/year stipend, including
    housing allowance
  • $5,000/year for required educational
    expenses such as conferences and
    workshops
  • Two paid 70-week summer
    internships (weekly stipends with
    housing, transportation, and travel
    allowances)
Eligibility
  • US Citizen age 78 or older
  • 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student
    at an MSI pursuing a STEM degree
  • Graduating Spring 2027 or later

Paul Tarell Family Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $1,500 (one-time, annual award).
  • Eligibility:
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
    • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. high school, college, or graduate program (high school seniors planning to enroll in college are also eligible).
    • Open to students who have faced and overcome a significant personal challenge or adversity (physical, emotional, financial, or personal).
  • Essay Requirement:
    “What is the most difficult challenge you have overcome, and how do you think it has shaped who you are today?”
    • 600–700 words, PDF or typed format.
  • Deadline: November 25, 2025.
  • Winner Announcement: December 15, 2025.

PNC Student Solution Scholarships

  • Free to enter.
  • Must be a legal resident of the United States who is 18 years of age or older (or the age of majority) at the time of the drawing.
  • Once you have created the account, have opted into the scholarship sweepstakes and have agreed to the official rules, you will be eligible for the subsequent two drawings within 12 months of registration. You will need to log into your account every 12 months to opt-in and enter into future scholarship sweepstakes drawings.
  • After you have established an account, you are free to explore the Financial Literacy tools and resources at any time whether or not you opt-in to the scholarship sweepstakes drawing.
  • Winners will be notified via phone and email. The email will come from PNCScholarship@pnc.com.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship

Up to $40,000, including:

  • $9,500 stipend per year for junior and senior year.
  • A 10-week paid internship at a NOAA facility.
  • Funds for travel and conference participation.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen
  • Enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university in the United States or U.S. territory as either:
    • Second-year students in a four-year academic program
    • Students in a two-year academic program at a community college with plans to transfer to a four-year academic program.
    • Third-year students in a five-year undergraduate program. 
  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Major in NOAA mission field, including but not limited to: 
    • atmospheric science, biology, cartography, chemistry, computer science, education, engineering, environmental science, geodesy, geography, marine science, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physical science, photogrammetry, physics, etc.

First Community Bank Scholarships

Applications available at First Community Bank

George M. Cruise

  • $1000 per year $500 per semester
  • Open to all high school seniors in the surrounding counties (Tazewell, Mercer, Bland, and McDowell)
  • Application deadline is around the second week in March every year
  • We send copies of applications to the local guidance counselors but if a student requests one from us we can mail one
  • Every year a scholarship recipient must submit their grades to us, carry a 3.0 GPA average, and remain a full time student in order to continue scholarship
  • This scholarship is only available during undergraduate schooling, it does not extend to masters programs.

Dante Castrodale Memorial Scholarship

  • $3,000 per year
  • Open to all high school seniors in McDowell County schools
  • Applications are to be turned into the McDowell County school board for committee selection.
  • We send copies of applications to the local guidance counselors but if a student requests one from us we can mail one
  • Every year a scholarship recipient must submit their grades to us and carry a 3.0 GPA average in order to continue scholarship
  • This scholarship is available outside of undergraduate schooling if student graduates early but continues into further schooling. However, the committee will have approve before further assistance is granted.

AmeriCorps Scholarship

AmeriCorps is an opportunity for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to give their time and talent to strengthen communities.


Scholarship Overview

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Coca-Cola Foundation are proud to offer financial assistance to outstanding students attending one of TMCF’s member-schools that include 53 publicly-supported HBCUs, HBCCs, PBIs, medical and law schools. Fifteen (15) scholars will be selected to receive a need-based scholarship of up to $10,000 for the 2024-2025 academic school year (which can only be applied to verifiable costs associated with average tuition and usual fees).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating High School Senior in 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Be enrolled full-time as an incoming freshman at a TMCF member-school during the 2024-2025 academic school year.
  • Be a First-generation college student.
  • Open to all majors.
  • Have a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must have the 2024-2025 FAFSA on file at your selected university/college by the time of selection.
  • Able to demonstrate a financial need.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551.
