Retired BSC Educator Awarded “Faculty Emeritus” Designation

 

Roger Owensby, whose career as a faculty member at Bluefield State College spanned 41 years, was awarded the designation of Faculty Emeritus during the College's 2019 Employee Recognition Celebration. Owensby’s career spanned 41 years as a member of the BSC faculty, and he concurrently served in a variety of interim administrative positions before retiring last year.

 

A Bluefield State alumnus, Owensby began his career as an instructor for the Mine Supervisory Training Program in 1977 and served as a member of the BSC Engineering Technology faculty. He also served as Acting Academic Dean of the Greenbrier Community College Center, Interim Dean of the BSC School of Engineering Technology and Computer Science, BSC’s Interim Athletic Director, and he Chaired the BSC Faculty Senate, Promotion & Tenure Committees, and co-chaired the self-study report prior to an institutional accreditation site visit by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Centeral Association of Colleges and Schools.

 

Among his many academic awards, Owensby received the “Russel Cousins Award for Excellence in Teaching Engineering” (1992), the BSC Outstanding Faculty Award (2002 & 2009), the West Virginia “Miners Celebration: Educator of the Year Award” (2013), and the BSC “Athletic Commitment to Excellence Award” (2018).
