The Brian A. Delp Humanitarian Athletic Award is given to a rising junior who exemplifies the character and commitment to Bluefield State College that Brian held. His college experience transformed him from a shy boy into an outgoing, enthusiastic participant in athletics, service and academics.
Brian Aaron Delp was a student athlete at Bluefield State College who was a three-year letterman in Men’s Cross Country and a strong motivator of young student-athletes and his teammates. He was actively involved in community service and campus activities including: Student Government Association, Student Athletic Advisory Committee (President), Bonners Scholars, Greek Council, Alpha Pi Omega, Student Employment, Program Board, Ambassadors, and Habitat for Humanity. Brian was named Mr. BSC in 2000 and 2002. He served as a medic in the West Virginia National Guard and was scheduled for deployment in Iraq.
In November 2002 – one month before he intended to graduate with a degree in Business Administration – Brian was fatally struck by a car on Route 460 while helping a stranded motorist. His parents, Samuel and Carla Delp, established the Brian A. Delp Humanitarian Athletic Scholarship in his memory to support current and future generations of student athletes at Bluefield State College.
The Brian A. Delp 5K Memorial Run/Walk was created in 2006 by the Bluefield State College Student Athletic Advisory Committee, of which Brian had been president. This award is a tribute to the example he set and a way of preserving his memory.
