Minority Health Institute
Bluefield State College (BSC), a historically black college, is located in the southern part of West Virginia, an area that is not only in desperate need of economic and educational revitalization, but also the need to reduce the burden of health disparities among its minority populations, particularly among the African-American population.
The mission of Bluefield State College is to provide students affordable and geographically accessible opportunities for public higher education. However, the unique mission of the college emphasizes the development and implementation of collaborative community-based programs that continuously benefit the community in which the college is located. Bluefield State College, in an effort to reduce the burdens of health disparities among the minority populations of the Appalachian region, established the Minority Health Institute in 2000.
Through the Minority Health Institute, the college has reached beyond its mission to educate students and now provides health education and awareness programs to the community. The Minority Health Institute's most recent and successful collaborative effort was the implementation of a two-year breast cancer awareness and prevention program among rural African-American women in southern West Virginia. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Disparity Grant Program. Project Export Center of Excellence is an extension of BSC Minority Health Institute. Project Export center of Excellence is made possible by a grant from National Institutes of Health/Center of Minority Health and Health Disparities.
