Goals/Objectives

The goal of the Outreach Core is to reduce the burdens of health disparities among the African-American population in the proposed service area (Mercer, McDowell and Raleigh Counties). Specifically, this core is designed to accomplish the following objectives:

• To provide comprehensive health education promoting awareness of breast cancer risk factors to at least 500 rural African-American women.
• To assist at least 500 rural African-American women with accessing mammogram screening services.
• To produce a research report that adds to the existing body of knowledge regarding the barriers that prevent rural African-American women from accessing mammogram screening services.
• To implement a support system to encourage participants to utilize the information outlined in the program.
• To increase cultural sensitivity awareness among at least 20 health care providers concerning delivery of mammogram screening services among African-American women in rural southern West Virginia.
• To identify partners from community-based service organizations and agencies providing HIV/AIDS services to African-Americans.
• To organize and develop a community planning committee for coordination of HIV/AIDS services in the community.
• To organize and develop a community planning committee for coordination of HIV/AIDS services in the community.
