Community Outreach and Information Dissemination Core
Goals/Objectives
The goal of the Outreach Core is to reduce the burdens of health disparities among the African-American population in the proposed service area (Mercer, McDowell and Raleigh Counties). Specifically, this core is designed to accomplish the following objectives:
Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program
This program is designed to promote prevention and early detection of breast cancer among rural African-American women in southern West Virginia. Specifically, this project was designed to accomplish five major objectives:
- To provide comprehensive health education promoting awareness of breast cancer risk factors to at least 500 rural African-American women.
- To assist at least 500 rural African-American women with accessing mammogram screening services.
- To produce a research report that adds to the existing body of knowledge regarding the barriers that prevents rural African-American women from accessing mammogram screening services.
- To implement a support system that encourages participants to utilize breast cancer awareness and prevention services available to them.
