Definitions of BS Distance Learning Modalities

Interactive Video Network (IVN): a two-way video-audio system where the students are seated in electronic classrooms at Bluefield, Beckley, Lewisburg, SWVCTC(Wyoming, McDowell and Sausville). The instructor is usually at the Bluefield site but may be at the Lewisburg site. The strength of this modality is that the students and instructor can see and hear one another simultaneously. These classes meet at the time, day, and campus scheduled each week and students are expected to attend each class.
Distance Learning or Asynchronous Distance Learning (ADL) refers to any combination of the above modalities (IVN-WE, WBBD or WECRT) with an e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) component in order to deliver instruction to the students in their homes at their convenience. Usually instruction is delivered by WWW, e-mail, videotape, text-study guide, and instructor-prepared study guides. Projects and papers are an integral part of the course content. . Exams may be open book, or proctored or online. Also, be sure to note that if your course has a Web component, you will access either BLACKBOARD or MOODLE for your course.
