Sims Memorial Basketball Tournament," December 19-20 at Bluefield State College. The opening round of the annual women's tournament, December 19 finds Edinboro University facing Alderson-Broaddus in the 6 p.m. opener, with the host BSC Lady Blues meeting Fairmont State in the 8 p.m. nightcap. On December 20, Edinboro battles Fairmont at 6, while BSC meets A-B at 8 p.m. The tournament is held in honor of a former Bluefield City Recreation Director, the late Herbert Sims. Mr. Sims, a BSC graduate who also served on the College's Institutional Board of Advisors, directed the local recreation program during a period of unprecedented growth. | |

These students have been selected as outstanding leaders. The BSC students were nominated by campus committees and editors of the annual directory, based on the students' academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and potential for continued success. They join an elite group of student selected from more than 1,900 institutions of higher education in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several foreign nations. Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1934. | Governor Underwood to Speak at Bluefield State College on December 9 | Wednesday, December 03 1997 | Governor Underwood to Speak at Bluefield State College on December 9 | West Virginia Governor Cecil Underwood will speak at Bluefield State College, December 9, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Basic Science Auditorium. The Governor's topic will be "Technology in Higher Education." His appearance at BSC comes in response to an invitation extended by students in BSC professor Jerry Corley's "Principles of Marketing" class. The public is invited to attend. Underwood became the youngest governor in the history of West Virginia when he was elected in 1956 at the age of 34. In 1996, he was elected the 32nd Governor of the State, taking office January 13, 1997. A former chair of the State College System Board of Directors, Underwood has taught school at both the high school and college levels. Earlier this year, he was elected chairman of the Southern Technology Council, a division of the Southern Growth Policies Board. He is also chair-elect of the SGPB and is scheduled to serve as chairman for 1998-99. Governor Underwood served as chairman of Morgantown Industrial/Research Park Inc., a company formed to bring high-tech industry and employment to central West Virginia. He is a past president of the Software Valley Foundation and a former vice president for Monsanto Corp. and Island Creek Coal Co. | GCCC to Relocate to New Facility, Offices Closed December 17-January 2 | Tuesday, November 25 1997 | GCCC to Relocate to New Facility, Offices Closed December 17-January 2 | The Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College is preparing to relocate to its new home, the historically-significant former Greenbrier College (Greenbrier Hall) facility in downtown Lewisburg, following the close of Fall Semester, 1997 classes and exams. Dr. David Perkins, GCCC Assistant Provost/Director, has announced that GCCC offices will be closed December 17, 1997-January 2, 1998 during the move. The renovated 47,000 square foot facility will reopen Monday, January 5, 1998. General registration for Spring Semester, 1998 classes will be conducted January 8-9. "Everyone associated with GCCC is excited about the possibilities Greenbrier Hall represents for expanding educational opportunity for the citizens of the Greater Greenbrier Valley," Perkins noted. "The spacious, well-equipped facility will permit new classes, new programs, and new methods for delivering existing programs. With new educational partnerships, such as the executive master's degree program in business administration offered by the WVU School of Business through BSC's GCCC distance learning classroom, we see the new building becoming the hub for all higher education in the region." | World Aids Days Observances Slated at BSC, December 1-4 | Tuesday, November 25 1997 | World Aids Days Observances Slated at BSC, December 1-4 | A series of activities has been planned for the observance of "World AIDS Days," December 1-4 at Bluefield State College. In conjunction with the South Central AIDS Network (SCAN), BSC will host a "World AIDS Day" Health Fair, December 1-4 in the lobby of the Basic Science Auditorium. Several community service organizations will participate in the Health Fair, providing AIDS education information. On Tuesday, December 2, the puppet show "Adventures of Buttons and Bows McKitty" will be presented in the Tierney Center Auditorium, Dickason Hall, beginning at 6 p.m. The puppet show will be followed by the video, "Camp Amongus." There will be free coloring books and crayons for children, and AIDS education literature for parents at this event, and refreshments will be provided by the BSC Campus Life office. On Thursday, December 4, poet Elaine Blue and the Cabell Minority AIDS Council will deliver a dramatic presentation "AIDS Education Through The Arts," beginning at 11 a.m. in the Student Union. A panel of the AIDS quilt will also be on display, December 1-4 in the Hebert Gallery, BSC Student Union. Tim Oxley, Executive Director of the Center for Economic Action at Concord College presented the program as part of the Appalachian Community Connections Project, designed and implemented by Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi, Director of the Center for International Understanding at Bluefield State College. The five-week Appalachian Community Connections Project includes short-term internships that expose new and young entrepreneurs from Russia to American business practices. The project is sponsored by the United States Information Agency to promote trade dialogue between different regions of the United States and Russia. |
