POSITION TITLE:               Academic Lab Instructional Assistant

WORKING TITLE:              Academic Lab Instructional Assistant & Chemical Hygiene Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: Provides assistance to the science laboratory instructors of Bluefield State College to ensure that the students in science laboratory courses receive the best education possible. Serves as Chemical Hygiene Officer to provide faculty, staff, and students with a safe learning and working environment in the science laboratory facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Laboratory Instructional Assistant’s Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up academic laboratories for classroom instruction for all the science laboratory courses. This includes procurement of chemicals and/or equipment needed for the class and storage of them afterward.
  • Maintain all science labs, including cleaning before and after class time.
  • Inventory all lab equipment and chemicals. This inventory is updated continually.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment for science instruction which includes ordering from science supply catalogs and traveling to local vendors. The orders require follow up for delivery dates. Completion of a monthly purchase log is a requirement for the purchasing department.
  • Prepare solutions, standard solutions, calibrate instruments, and care for living organisms as required.
  • Assist faculty in monitoring lab exams, setting up lab exams, and putting exams away when finished.
  • Supervise student employees which assist with lab set up and cleaning.
  • Assist science faculty with other duties as needed.
  • Maintain and set up audiovisual equipment including digital camera for microscope, DVD players, slide projectors, video camera, and televisions for science students and faculty.
  • Maintain the microscopes for performance and repair minor problems. Set up annual service for preventative maintenance.
  • Assist research students with ordering supplies and gathering equipment for their research projects. Provide work areas for the research students.
  • Instruct research students on how to prepare solutions, standard solutions, calibrate equipment, and care for living organisms as required.
  • Assist students in the laboratory setting during and after class time if the instructor is not available.
  • Assist adjunct science faculty with photocopy needs.
  • Check equipment periodically to see if it is in good working order.
  • Maintain and run the steam generator and the distilled water still and troubleshoot when there is a problem.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste by using the autoclave.

 

Chemical Hygiene Officer’s Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with administrators, faculty, and other employees to develop and implement appropriate chemical hygiene policies and practices.
  • Monitor procurement, use, and disposal of chemicals used in the labs.
  • Maintain the appropriate audits.
  • Assist administrators, faculty, and staff with the development of safety precautions and adequate facilities.
  • Know the current legal requirements concerning regulated substances.
  • Keep current on required certifications.
  • Participate on the safety committee.
  • Keep the Material Safety Data Sheets current. These are provided in each lab and in the chemical storage rooms.
  • Perform routine safety checks on safety equipment and supplies. Maintain an updated inventory of safety supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain safety training records and schedule safety training.
  • Provide each lab course before the lab class begins with a lab safety form for each student to read and sign that they agree with the safety procedures and policies for that course. Maintain these records on file.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Minimum two year’s work experience in a laboratory setting. There is no equivalency in qualifications for this position.

Required within 30 days of hire:

  • DOT HM-181 certificate (for labeling and transporting hazardous waste)
  • RCRA/Hazardous Waste Generator certificate (for handling, packaging, labeling, marking, and inspecting hazardous wastes; also for filling out and signing hazardous waste manifests)

Note: The physical requirements of this position include the transporting equipment, lifting and carrying boxes of purchased supplies and equipment. This position will have exposure to fumes from toxic chemicals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   Master’s degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry

COMPENSATION: Classified Non-Exempt, Pay Grade 17, with a starting salary of $30,767
