Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi, Director of the Center for International Understanding at Bluefield State College, has accepted an invitation to serve as a member of the "Visiting Committee" of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy. The Visiting Committee will provide guidance for the Academy in its effort to "reduce accidents and improve health in the mining industry through education and training," as noted in NMHSA's strategic plan. The plan further notes, "Our vision is to become a nationally and internationally recognized center for developing mine health and safety training programs of the highest quality and effectiveness, and to serve as a facility where participants can meet, share and exchange knowledge and experiences related to miner safety and health." Jamkhandi noted, in a letter to J. Davitt McAtteer, (Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health, U.S. Department of Labor), "I am pleased to accept your invitation to be a member of the Visiting Committee, which will provide guidance to the Academy in its relations with colleges and universities and in international activities." The CIU Director said his center will distribute information about the Academy's training programs through CIU offices in Russia, India, and Slovakia.
