The success of a collaborative effort involving Bluefield State College's Admissions Office and Registrar's Office has been detailed in a feature article in the July 1997 issue of the nationally-distributed "Enrollment Management Report." The article, "Offices Collaborate on Successful On-Site Registration Project," describes how the cooperative activities of the two BSC offices have helped the institution to realize enrollment increases in five of the past six years, despite a significant decline in high school graduating class sizes during the period. BSC has enjoyed success with open houses for high school seniors each year, the article noted, and at a brainstorming session, the idea arose of "taking the show on the road'" through on-site registration at area high schools. Last year, Bluefield State College, which has a total enrollment of more than 2,500 students, registered 180 high school seniors on-site. Registrar Ralph Patsel noted, "Our focus is on technology. We're demonstrating our technology by going to the high schools to register students. The state legislature has put out a mandate that we are to do everything we can to increase college enrollment and we believe this strategy is consistent with that mandate." Admissions/Enrollment Management Director John Cardwell added, "The on-site registration permits our people to meet and work with prospective students. The students are able to establish contact and know someone when they come here."
