(Bluefield)—Dr. Carolyn Stuart has accepted the invitation to serve as the keynote speaker at Bluefield State College's 2014 Commencement Exercises on May 17 at the Brushfork Armory.
Dr. Stuart, a West Virginia native, was born in McDowell County. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Bluefield State College, a Master of Arts in Counseling from Marshall University, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her diverse background includes experience in higher education, counseling, project development, mediation and consulting in the area of cultural diversity.
"The people I met throughout my life have always been willing to share their knowledge with me," she observed recently. "When the State Office of Minority Affairs was established and Governor Tomblin looked at candidates, I had a background in substance abuse and mental health counseling. I had moved from a GED to a Ph.D. I can talk to anyone and show them from my own experience that the cycle of poverty can be broken."
Degrees will be conferred to approximately 340 BSC students during the exercises.
