(Bluefield)—"It's never too late to earn your degree." That's the foundation for the Degree Now Adult Scholars Program that will be offered at Bluefield State College. The program is designed to help adult learners graduate from college. A mandatory information workshop for all interested adult learners will be held on April 29, beginning at 7 p.m., on the BSC campus in Dickason Hall/Room 441.

With funding support from a Lumina Foundation grant coordinated through the College Foundation of West Virginia, the Degree Now program at BSC will identify and reach a target audience of adults who have earned at least 67 hours of college credit with at least a 2.5 grade point average. "The program will offer a foundational summer course to help these adult learners transition back into college," explained Dr. Sarita Rhonemus, BSC's Director of Outreach Programs. "Participants in the program will work with other adult learners who share the same challenges and dreams. By studying in a community of adult students, participants will have a sense of being 'connected.' We will address topics like financial challenges, lack of career goals, and strategies for handling multiple life responsibilities while attending college."

Dr. Marsha Krotseng, BSC President, added, "College access and degree attainment are truly 'life changers' for the adult students we currently serve and for those we hope to serve. The Degree Now Adult Scholars Program will expand the opportunity for these very deserving adult students to learn, graduate, and succeed. Thanks to this wonderful support from the Higher Education Policy Commission's Degree Now program, adult students will have access to additional resources at Bluefield State College to help them complete their college degree."

Applications for the June 2014 Adult Scholars Course will be taken during this session. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Dr. Sarita A. Rhonemus by phone (304-327-4400) or email (
