(Bluefield)— Bluefield State College celebrates the start of its baseball, softball, tennis, and golf seasons with the inaugural "Spring Sports Shoutout," a cookout on Wednesday, March 26 in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center. Free food and nonalcoholic beverages will be given away, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Student Center. BSC spring sports coaches and student-athletes will be introduced to the college community, and door prizes, and t-shirts will be available, while supplies last. A putting contest will also be conducted.
The Spring Sports Shoutout, sponsored by ACES (Alcohol Choices Education for Students, BSC Student Life, and the BSC Athletic Department, also features giveaways and alcohol education displays. Last summer, the National Collegiate Athletic Association awarded a CHOICES education grant to Bluefield State College to develop an alcohol education campaign led by student athletes and other student leaders for the benefit of all BSC students. Big Blue Tailgate is a featured event in the College's schedule of activities to promote "Alcohol Choices Education for Students" (ACES).
Dr. Cravor Jones, coordinator of the CHOICES grant, noted, "Funding received from the grant will provide student leadership opportunities as well as collaboration opportunities to BSC departments and will bring an informative and creative alcohol education campaign to all students and the community." Two major events, "Big Blue Madness," and "Big Blue Tailgate," were very successful, spotlighting BSC's winter sports teams in a festive, nonalcoholic environment that provided attendees with alcohol education displays.
