(Bluefield)—In recognition of retiring administrator John Cardwell's 34 years of service to Bluefield State College, the BSC Foundation and the College have endorsed the creation of the "Cardwell Family Endowed Scholarship."

Cardwell was the College's Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at the time of his retirement earlier this year. He had previously served the college as Director of Intramurals, Director of Campus Activities, Head Cheerleading and Assistant Baseball Coach, Assistant Dean of Students, and Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management.

"John has served Bluefield State with distinction. His commitment to helping students achieve their potential, both through education and personal development, has been a driving force throughout his career," noted Dr. Marsha Krotseng, BSC President. "I have met many students and graduates who credit John with being the 'difference maker' in their lives."

Funds raised to build the Cardwell Family Endowed Scholarship will be invested in an endowment, a percentage of which, set by the BSC Foundation, will be awarded to a deserving student each Spring to be used for the following year. The scholarship will be presented to a rising BSC junior or senior student who maintains a grade point average of 2.75 or better and is involved in extracurricular and volunteer activities, according to Betty Carroll, the College's Director of Institutional Advancement and Planning.

"With the support of those who have been helped by John, we are confident the Cardwell Family Endowed Scholarship can reach its endowed threshold and be awarded to deserving students in the near future," Carroll added.

Individuals and organizations wishing to support the Cardwell Family Endowed Scholarship are encouraged to contact Betty Carroll by phone (304-327-4031) or e-mail (
