(Bluefield)—The Bluefield State College Research and Development Corporation has received a $10,000 grant to fund a program that provides students with human services internships and facilitates awareness of high-risk drinking among college students.  Dr. Anthony Woart, BSC Professor of Sociology and Director/Minority Health Institute, authored the grant, which will fund the “BSC Student Empowerment Behavioral Health Program, which enables three BSC social science students to gain experience as summer interns at ResCare, a human services company that offers services to people of all ages and abilities.

BSC student interns Emma Zobo, Sussie Green, and Sherri Rutherford are gaining valuable experience, and they’ve been impressed by the caring manner in which ResCare staff treat and interact with their clients, according to the Dr. Tamara Ferguson, the grant’s Principal Investigator.  The internship experience was designed by ResCare’s Christine Riggins and Russell Shrewsbury.  Dr. Woart is working to identify funding to maintain the internship program for BSC students in the future.

This fall, BSC student leaders Erica Meade, Safiayetou Demba, and Theophilus Howe, will lead focus group discussion at BSC and will distribute informational brochures designed to improve behavioral health services among students on campus.. Ferguson and Woart expressed appreciation for the work of Dr. Sarita Rhonemus (Interim Director of Scholarly Research and Sponsored Programs at BSC) and Dr. Tracey Anderson (BSC’s Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness) for their assistance in grant submission and implementation.  They also noted that Ray Guy, CPA and Fiscal Manager/Treasurer, Bluefield State College Research and Development Corporation, has provided professional accounting and bookkeeping services for the grant.
