Sylvester and janice Myers(Bluefield)—Mr. Sylvester Myers, a Bluefield State College alumnus, has accepted an invitation to deliver the commencement address at BSC’s 2009 graduation exercises. The College’s 112th commencement program will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Mr. Myers’ recently published autobiography, From Coal Fields, to Oil Fields and Beyond; A Life in Pursuit of All I Could Be, is an inspirational tale of his rags to riches journey from a childhood in a McDowell County coal camp to the presidency of his internationally known construction cost-estimating management firm with offices at four locations in the United States.

In his book, he describes his years in a segregated US Army during the Korean War, a 25-year career in the US Army Corps of Engineers, and an opportunity that took him to Saudi Arabia to serve as a “budget watchdog” over a $20 billion military construction project with the government there. That preparation, plus his commitment to continuing his education, led him to start his own engineering company.  He and his wife, Mrs. Janice Myers, maintain an active schedule, addressing middle and senior high school students, civic and professional organizations, while also working on several community service initiatives.

Mrs. Myers is an alumna of Antioch College in Washington, D.C., completing additional graduate work in Public Administration at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  While in Saudi Arabia, she worked with the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Joint Economic Commission as Senior Administrative Assistant to the Director.   In 1988, after Mrs. Myers returned with her husband to the United States from the Middle East, she co-founded S.C. Myers & Associates, Inc. (SCMA) in Washington, D.C.  Currently, she provides management support to the President/CEO of SCMA and serves as Publicist for her husband’s memoir.
“We look forward to Mr. Myers’ message to graduates and their families,” noted Dr. Walker. “He’s a very talented, positive leader and his willingness to return to his alma mater and share his experience with our students is greatly appreciated.”

More than 340 Bluefield State College students will receive diplomas during the 2009 commencement exercises at the Brushfork Armory.
