New York, NY– March 18, 2011 – Bluefield State College has been announced as a finalist in The Home Depot’s 2011 “Retool Your School” campus improvement grant program. Designed to reinvigorate Historically Black Colleges and Universities, finalists are competing for $150,000 in grants for on-campus improvements and are now asking their communities and the public to help them win. Now through April 22, supporters can visit http://www.retoolyourschool.com/vote-now.aspx to vote for their favorite school and sustainable campus improvement project. One $50,000 major grant and ten $10,000 minor grants will be awarded. The Home Depot® will announce the winners on May 16, 2011.
“We were extremely pleased with the response from schools and the community as a whole to last year’s ‘Retool Your School’ program. These institutions really showed us their school spirit and pride with the overwhelming amount of online votes we received,” said Trish Mueller, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, The Home Depot.® “This year, we look forward to providing grants for a variety of practical and eco-friendly projects.”
To apply for the “Retool Your School” grants, HBCUs submitted applications via the “Retool Your School” Website by the February 22 entry deadline. During the online voting period, currently underway, consumers will be able to view descriptions of major and minor projects and can cast one vote per day for their favorite HBCU. Following the online vote, a panel of distinguished judges will also evaluate each school’s proposal. Projects will be judged based on votes posted to the Website, as well as relevance to the proposal requirements as listed on the website and application. Entrants must highlight how each project will make a lasting, positive impact on their campus and special attention will be given to schools that pitch eco-friendly tasks. The winning schools will be determined based on a combination of online votes and the judges’ evaluations.
BSC will face stiff competition from finalist schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands. Therefore, area residents, BSC alumni, friends and family should log on and vote at http://www.retoolyourschool.com/vote-now.aspx to ensure that the Big Blues bring home the grand prize.
