Vernon Oakes, Business Exectuive and Educator, to Deliver BSC’s 2010 Founder’s Day Speech (w/photo)

Vernon_Oakes(Bluefield)—Vernon Oakes, a Bluefield State College alumnus (Class of 1970) will return to his alma mater on October 16 to deliver BSC’s 2010 Founder’s Day speech.  The speech is a highlight of the College’s homecoming week activities, which also begin on October 16.  The Founder’s Day luncheon and program will be held in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center cafeteria, beginning at noon.

Oakes is founder and president of Oakes Management, Inc. and he serves as a real estate manager, investor, and consultant.  He is also a management consultant for non-real estate projects and was previously president of Cummins Engine Puerto Rico, Inc.  He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Penn State University and an MBA from Stanford University.  Oakes is also an officer and member of the Board of Directors/West Virginia Access Center for Higher Education.  He has 11 years’ teaching experience at the college level and two years’ experience training adults for responsibilities with the U.S. Department of the Interior.

At BSC, he was president of the Student Senate and, while at Bluefield High School, he was named co-captain of the West Virginia All-Star High School football team.

BSC’s observance of homecoming begins on October 16, with a parade, starting at 10 a.m. and traveling from North Street to the campus, followed by the Founder’s Day program at noon in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center cafeteria.  Other events and activities include:
