(Bluefield)--Bluefield State College has been selected as one of 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) from across the country to receive a campus improvement grant award from The Home Depot 2010 “Retool Your School” grant program. BSC was among the 62 HBCUs in competition for 11 “Retool Your School” grants. Selection was based on a combination of the merit of the grant application and the votes cast online in support of each competing institution.
The BSC grant will be utilized to improve landscaping on campus, with new signage, garden spaces, and plants. “We’re grateful for the opportunity provided by The Home Depot in behalf of HBCUs, and we’re gratified by the voting support that Bluefield State College received from our students, staff, alumni, and friends,” noted Dr. Albert Walker, BSC President.
In the coming weeks, The Home Depot will contact BSC to coordinate the campus improvement initiative. “We know as well as anyone that the smallest change can have the biggest impact on the lives of others,” said Frank Bifulco, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, The Home Depot. “This program does more than just enhance the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It also offers our communities the opportunity to show their support for these culturally rich institutions.”
The Home Depot is the world's largest home improvement specialty retailer, with 2,245 retail stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, 10 Canadian provinces, Mexico and China.
