BLUEFIELD – Women entering the job market, as well as those currently employed, often find themselves in unfamiliar territory. To help navigate the work environment, Bluefield State College Foundation, WISE (Women in Search of Empowerment), and Brown Edwards & Co. host a free seminar on “Ten Top Ways to Keep Your Employer Happy” on September 16, 9 am to noon in Dickason Hall on the BSC campus. The first in a quarterly series, the seminar focuses on business etiquette, unwritten rules, and strategies for success in the workplace.

From time management to proper use of company property, behavior on the job can be different from what’s appropriate in the home and with friends. Seminar attendees will learn about ten pitfalls and how to turn them into positive attributes. The session’s interactive format will engage participants in discussions of real-life situations and solutions.

The seminar will benefit women seeking employment for the first time and students entering professions as well as those currently employed who want to succeed and progress in the workplace.

Presenters include BSC faculty member Dr. Deb Halsey-Hunter of the W. Paul Cole, Jr. School of Business. She described the rationale for creating the seminar: “As many of our local working women's groups no longer exist, we hope this group will provide some timely topics that all women face in the workplace, whether just entering the workforce or with several years of work experience.

“We all face the same workplace issues brought about by technology, diversity, and work demands.  This group will provide a venue to share our experiences as we continue to be a vital part of the workforce.”

Also leading the discussions will be Dr. Robin Ware, BSC’s Off-Campus Coordinator, and Karen Harvey, Executive Director of the BSC Foundation.

Connie Saunders, Executive Director of WISE and owner of Saunders Staffing, said the seminar was organized to address a need she has observed as an employer and as a mentor to women entering the workforce. “In the business world, success goes far beyond skills and education.  Informed, aware, confident women reach to the top because they invest their time in people skills and communication,” she said.

“WISE is so excited to see the last phase of our program come to life through Bluefield State College and presentation of the first seminar on the important subject of business etiquette.”  The intention, Saunders added, is to host quarterly seminars on the BSC campus to assist working women in the region.

The free seminar, “Ten Top Ways to Keep Your Employer Happy,” will be held Friday, September 16, from 9 am to noon in Dickason Hall on the BSC campus adjacent to the Frank Easley Bridge on Route 52. Lunch will be served, and attendance is limited to 50. Reservations are required; call 304-327-4235.
