(Bluefield)—Bluefield State College administrator Robin Ware and BSC faculty member Darrell Thompson have accepted appointment to the Mercer County Read Aloud Board of Directors. Barbara Pettus, the county’s Read Aloud Program chair, welcomed Dr. Ware (BSC’s Interim Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs) and Dr. Thompson (BSC Assistant Professor of Education) to the Board.
“Read Aloud’s purpose is to support volunteer readers as they spend time sharing their love of books with children of preschool and elementary school age,” Pettus noted. “Dr. Ware and Dr. Thompson certainly have a passion for reading and they are welcome additions to our 15 member Board, which includes stay-at-home moms, Concord University faculty, a local bank employee, public library directors, and both current and recently retired local educators.
The Read Aloud program recently organized two “Snuggle and Read” events, which provided fleece quilts and new children’s books to more than 75 families of preschool children. “We want to ‘turn kids on’ to reading at an early age, identify parents and volunteers to read in the classroom, and develop opportunities to cultivate young students’ love for reading beyond the classroom,” she continued. “Read Aloud stimulates their imagination, strengthens their vocabulary, and builds listening skills.
