(Bluefield)—Dr. Tesfaye Belay, an Associate Professor of Biology at Bluefield State College, has been selected to receive a $20,000 research grant from the NASA West Virginia Experimental Program under the collaborative research program between Marshall University and Bluefield State College. This collaborative research work will be performed both in the labs of Dr. Belay at BSC and Dr. Hongwei Yu at Marshall University.
This is the second consecutive year that a proposal submitted by Dr. Belay has been approved for NASA WV EPSCoR funding. “This grant will augment the depth and breadth of NASA research work initiated at BSC,” Dr. Belay noted. Through an earlier grant from West Virginia Idea Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE) and mini-grant from WVEPSCoR, BSC established a biomedical research laboratory and the College is now a participant in a statewide higher education research network.
Through the 2008-2009 WVNASA and WV-INBRE funding, two minority students have been involved in research and presented posters at three national and two regional scientific conferences.
“Through our research laboratory, we promote basic biomedical research, acquire extramural grant support, and disseminate information on our research findings to the scientific community,” Dr. Belay continued.
