(Bluefield)—Dr. Tesfaye Belay, an Associate Professor of Biology at Bluefield State College, has been selected to receive a $20,000 research grant from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium under the collaborative research program between Marshall University and Bluefield State College. This collaborative research work will be performed in the labs of Dr. Belay at BSC and Dr. Hongwei Yu at Marshall University.

This is the fourth consecutive year that a proposal submitted by Dr. Belay has been approved for NASA WV EPSCoR funding.  “This grant will augment the depth and breadth of NASA research work initiated at BSC,” Dr. Belay noted.  The project is entitled, “Evaluating Virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa under Extreme Starvation Condition.”  Through previous and current grant awards from NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, five African American undergraduate students have been trained in biomedical research related to NASA.

Dr. Belay is a recipient of the 2009 Thurgood Marshall “Outstanding Leadership in Faculty Research Award.”  Through an earlier grant from West Virginia Idea Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE) and mini-grant from WVEPSCoR, BSC established a biomedical research laboratory and the College is now a participant in a statewide higher education research network.
