(Bluefield)— Bluefield State College Associate Degree Nursing students recently put together personal hygiene kits and blankets for residents of the Mercer County Fellowship Home in Bluefield.   The project was coordinated by Sheri Winfree, a BSC nursing graduate and an AmeriCorps volunteer.

The Mercer County Fellowship Home provides housing and rehabilitation services to adult males recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.  It offers a structured environment that encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual healing through educational programs.

“The project fulfilled requirements for the Nursing Practicum course, which focuses upon medical surgical, mental health, and maternity issues,” explained Sandra Wynn, BSC Associate Degree Nursing program director.  “This project helps our students gain greater understanding of,  and satisfaction from, volunteerism.  It will cultivate their appreciation for volunteerism when they continue in their professional lives as registered nurses in their local communities.”

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.
