Three BSC Students Present Research that Focuses Upon Improving the Safety of Water Supplies on Space Shuttle Flights (w/photo)

(Bluefield)— Bluefield State College students Jordan Manns, Elisha Martin, and Tanise Montgomery (not pictured) were featured at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, as well as the General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and the West Virginia Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence/IdeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence Conferences.

The students have conducted research to investigate Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a dangerous bacterium that has been detected in the water supplies of several space shuttle flights. This microbe is known to create sickness under the stressful conditions of space flight.

Noting that P. aeruginosa is well adapted for growth in low nutrient environments, the BSC students investigated the viability of P. aeruginosa to grow in water without nutrients, a point of focus upon which very little research had previously been conducted.  Through collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. Hongwei Yu at Marshall University, current and future studies are concentrating upon identifying and characterizing the genes and proteins involved in the microbe’s long-term ability to exist under starvation conditions.
