West Virginia Suicide Statistics
According to West Virginia Vital Statistics Report (2005), suicide was the 11th leading cause of death among West Virginia residents overall, and the third leading cause of death for ages 15-19.
Compared to the national average, West Virginia’s suicide rate among young adults is almost twice as high in the 20 to 24 age category.
These data point to the need for a state institution such as Bluefield state College to formulate strategies as well as design programs to address the mental health needs for the state’s young population.
About The Program
The Bluefield State College ( BSC ) Suicide Prevention Program is designed to provide a culturally sensitive campus-based suicide prevention intervention involving a sustainable student support network for campus-based suicide prevention, awareness, and training intended to increase students’ awareness of suicide risk factors as well as increase the utilization of campus-based suicide preventive services.
